Electric Bilge Pump Kits efficiently extract water from whitewater canoes/kayaks and assembled with convenient attachment points for easy installment. These kits have been thoroughly tested in our personal canoes. We were so impressed with the reliability and low maintenance that we decided to offer the kits on the web. The Bilge Pump and SLA battery are durable and reliable, and the SLA battery will stays highly charged through the summer to winter temperature ranges. Make sure to charge your SLA batteries after each use and at least once per season to extend the life of the battery. Our SLA batteries life have been extended (5+ years) by maintaining a fully charged battery in storage.
This website provides a resource for the boating community about electric bilge pumps, the components, the wiring, the tools required, and the maintenance of bilge pump systems. This is a DIY website, all parts are listed to make your own kit. It will however take several hours to build, specialized tools, and time & resources to order parts for all 12 components (my kits take 7 different vendors). Please email me if you have questions or concerns about our kits at [email protected].

Bilge Pump Attachment Options
The bilge pump kit is designed to be attached to thigh strap d-rings with a bungee cord loop and mini carabiners (included in the kit). The solo bilge pump kit can be modified to fit without d-ring attachment points with extra tie downs. It will require some extra velcro strips around the bilge pump kit attaching to velcro attachments on the pedestal (extra velcro comes in the kit). Another option would be to use a 1" wide x 10'-12' cam buckle strap (not included with the kit) around the bilge pump kit and the pedestal (see photo to the right for configuration). |
Bilge Pump Kit - Optional Configurations For Modern Canoes
The Photo Gallery has some optional ideas on where to mount the toggle switch, battery, and pump. Some boat configurations like Blackfly, Silverbirch, Millbrook, and Esquif require mounting the bilge pump kit in tight quarters. It may be more convenient to mount the switch on a vertical surface of the pedestal or the bulkhead. Some boats (like the Blackfly) requires the pump to be notched 2" into the pedestal with a rust stripper grinding wheel and dragon skin steel sanding sheet (mid canoe) with the SLA battery placed behind the paddler and the switch mounted to the Bulkhead. Another Blackfly configuration shown on the photos tab (Blackfly Installation) shows the bilge pump behind the foot peg, the SLA battery positioned behind pedestal, and switch mounted on the thigh bulkhead support mini-cell. These optional configurations add cost to the bilge pump kits see Question 44, but you get a custom fit for your specific canoe. Measurements will be required for customizing the kit from the switch to the pump and from the battery location to the pump when components are located separately. You'll need to decide if a standard bilge pump kit (bundled together) will work with your particular canoe outfitting. If the standard kit does not meet your needs, look at the Photos tab and email me jtkcanoes[at]gmail.com for optional configurations. You can also send me several low resolution photos of your canoe outfitting and I will make suggestions for arranging the pump, battery, and switch in your canoe. Please view the Blackfly page for ideas and buying options.
